The Foundation receives funds from members of the community and those requests are almost always donated for a specific purpose. Sometimes they are donated on behalf of a loved one or family members as a memoriam. These endowment funds are another way the Foundation is able to support education at Summerville High School. Endowment funds may be donated at any time during the year. The process is easy and begins with a call to the SHSF Executive Director, Jan Hiebert. You can reach her at 209.536.9227.
Dr. Marsha Speck, a SHS 1965 alumna, plays tennis at our courts when she is in town for a visit with her sister. In fact, she manages at least one session of tennis a day no matter where she is in the world. The Foundation was contacted by Dr. Speck in 2018 to see if an annual distribution from her parent’s IRA could be accepted by the Foundation and used for improvements to the tennis program.
Pat and Jim Gurney, the parents of Marsha Speck, graduated from Summerville in 1940 and 1942. In fact, the Gurney family has a long history at Summerville with Signa Ness, Dr. Speck’s grandmother, was a graduate in the class of 1922. They had a life-long love of the school and showed that love by supporting the various activities there over the years. They have left a wonderful legacy for local tennis fans and the SHS Tennis Team to enjoy!
Marsha donated $15K in 2016 to have the tennis courts resurfaced. And the IRA distribution has brought $9,972 to the Foundation in the past two years.
This year the coaches, Leonard Mauro, Jim Lupo, and Jim Epperly purchased a $6,420 tennis serving machine to be used by the Summerville tennis team at practices and shade cloth for the courts.
