Gabe Rice was a three-sport varsity athlete at Summerville High School, where he graduated in the spring of 1992. As a three-year quarterback and linebacker, Gabe helped bring Summerville from the bottom of the league standings, to league champions in 1991. In his final year, Summerville went 8-2 and Gabe was named the co-Most Valuable Player of the MLL. He finished his football career with 2,975 passing yards (a then school record), 22 touchdowns and had 15 wins as a starting quarterback. He was truly loved by the local community.

After graduation, Gabe played two years of football at Kings River College (now Reedley College) and then transferred to California State University, Chico, where he continued his football career as a quarterback. In his final game, which was also the final football game Chico had before shutting down the program, Gabe led the Wildcats to a 25-20 win over Humboldt State to capture the NCAC championship.
