To the Summerville High School Foundation, Jan Hiebert, and the members of the Hall of Fame Committee who remembered me and wrote my name down on your ballots . . . I’m incredibly honored that you considered me worthy of induction. When I heard about my selection, I was overwhelmed as I reflected on the number of people who helped shape my life. To the best of my ability, in no certain order, I want to thank them. Although we rarely crossed paths, I must thank Dr. Richard Thorsted for his vision and devotion to the students, teachers and community at Summerville High School. Also, to Dennis Wong and Dave Urquhart, thank you for your patience and guidance.
To my coaches who motivated me to work harder than I thought I could: Darcy Wingo, Marlen Ronten, Jim Epperly, Marlin Heldstab, John Baldwin, Terry LaTorre, Debbie Dequine and Don Jardine, thank you for your encouragement, your inspiration and sharing your passion for sports with me. To my language teachers who insisted that I pay closer attention to detail: Paul Nixon, Wayne DeGennaro, Karen Shaw, Mary Paquette and Frank Borrego. I use the lessons you taught me every day in my profession, thank you. To my science and math teachers, including the social sciences, who had the superpower to take complex subjects, decrypt them and make them fun to learn: Allan Antinetti, Steve Mosely, Harry Shaw, and Debbie Aufdenspring, thank you. To my elementary and middle school teachers at Twain Harte School who ensured I was ready to attend Summerville High: Vicki Bigelow, Don Moore, Gary Anderson, Stan Cross, Tom Slaght, Madeline Sharp, Warren Schmid, and my friendly bus drivers Loren Mason and Cliff Borgquist, thank you.
To my classmates and teammates at Summerville: Tom Baldwin, Chuck Myers, Louis Alexander, Kenny Buck, Josh Perkel, Mark Jackson, Victor Loesche, Joe Tafoya, Jeff Bachtelle, Dean Brick, Gretchen Day, Lisa & Lori LaTorre, Susan Slakey and so many others, thank you for your friendship. A special thank you to John and Carol Baldwin: I spent so many hours in your home with Tommy, Johnny and Billy starting in 5th grade all the way through high school and you always treated me like family. Thank you both for your kindness and generosity.
To my parents, Jim and Susan: you taught me the power of belief and you gave me an endless supply of encouragement. You taught me discipline, respect and the value of hard work. Most importantly, you loved me. Thank you.
To the dozens of others out there who inspired me, thank you.
To any small town kid who has a dream: Push yourself harder, dream bigger. Leave it ALL on the floor every practice and every game. Believe in yourself.
