(Later in life when he lived in Italy a bakery clerk was amazed when she turned around and saw Luc in his Air Force uniform; while her back was turned she thought he was an Italian by his accent.) While serving as a Student Representative on the SHS Board of Education Luc planned and implemented a campus-wide clean-up program that had fellow students picking up liter with the incentive of being able to leave school 15 minutes early. The seniors loved it and the campus was spotless! Other interests at SHS were JSA Junior States Man of America, doing lots of debating, playing with the Golf Team, and taking guitar lessons at Live Oak Music. He served as Student Body President his last year at Summerville. He developed an interest in the military by joining Air Force Jr. ROTC. Eight years ago USAF Major Lucas, GAZA, Gruenther was flying his F16 over the Adriatic Sea in a night training mission. The weather was terrible, and Luc with no visibility, unable to see a horizon, wearing night vision goggles, became spatially disoriented. With alarms sounding, Betty bitching, and tremendous G forces on his human body, Luc’s jet plunged through the air, dropping 30,000 feet in mere seconds, Luc ejected into the ocean. His jet followed crashing into a million pieces. We searched for Luc for 3 long days, the worked praying for his recovery. Luc was found by Italian fishermen, he had not survived.

That day we lost an amazing young man. Luc was a true and honorable humanitarian. There is not a person on Earth who has a bad thing to say about Luc. Luc had an uncanny ability to communicate with children and animals as well as adults; he had supportive FAIP (Instructor Pilot) abilities and he had regard and respect for family, friends, and complete strangers and dynamic courage to live everyday of his life with gusto. Luc served and loved America. It is difficult to describe exactly how wonderful Luc was. He was a great communicator, always did his best, was helpful, smart, fit, wise and funny with a great smile. Everyone wanted to be around Luc; he listened and was a great friend-he was just a good guy. We miss him terribly. Luc accomplished so many things but he is mostly remembered for how he treated people and animals.
