Tom Trott graduated from Summerville High School (SHS) in 1998 with a 4.25 GPA, four years of priceless memories and a firm foundation for life ahead. To this day, he still feels privileged to have attended a high school that took such pride in its academics, athletics and well-being of its students.
Tom encountered some of his all-time favorite teachers (elementary school and college included) at SHS. These teachers, taking a personal interest in Tom’s future, helped him discover and grow in his talent for physics, math and chemistry. Their encouragement and support guided him to pursue an education and career in civil engineering.
A love of sports, teamwork and competition led Tom to play football, basketball and baseball all four years at SHS. His timing could not have been better for great sports – the Class of 1998’s athleticism shines brightly in SHS sports history. Bear football went 10-0 during Tom’s junior year and 9-1 during his senior year. Bear basketball went 27-3 during his junior year and scored an astonishing 100+ points in nine games. The thrill of competing on those teams are still some of Tom’s fondest memories and the experience taught him the importance of hard work, discipline and close camaraderie.
Although some may have labeled Tom a “jock” during his time at SHS, he prided himself in befriending all groups of students. His SHS experience was filled with close friendships and community, leaving him with a deep-rooted value for community. Although he did not realize it at the time, this value would shape his life path moving forward.
After graduating from SHS, Tom moved to San Luis Obispo to attend Cal Poly, where he ultimately obtained his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (cum laude). Deep friendships and the beauty of the central coast caused Tom to remain in San Luis Obispo for 15 years, where he began his career, became a licensed civil engineer and (most importantly) started his family. Tom’s heart for community continued to grow during this time. His career began with computer-aided design, but quickly shifted to management as he discovered that he loved working with others. As a result, he became more and more fully engaged in leadership both at work and at his church.
Although the beauty of the central coast is a dream for some, the Sierra Nevada mountains were always calling Tom and his wife, Anne, to return. In 2013, they excitedly moved to Twain Harte where Tom now has his dream job – General Manager of Twain Harte Community Services District. Tom, Anne and their two children love living in such a tight-knit community and enjoy adventuring together into the beautiful mountain wilderness. Tom is grateful and honored to now take the foundations and values he developed at SHS and use them to serve the community he grew up in.
