Bear Grant Awarded $1440 for Printing New School Newspaper

Several students were interested in creating a newspaper for Summerville High School this year. It was a great year to start up a hard copy newspaper again. The football team had outstanding success this year and the SHS Foundation hosted the first ever All Years Class Reunion known as “Calling All Bears,” and the SUHSD celebrated 111 years of excellence in education. There is a lot of news going on at the Bear Caves!!

The new paper will be known as, “Beyond the Cave,” and will be the product of a new journalism elective being offered at SHS this year. As it turned out the funding for printing the paper and distribution of the paper was not coved in the new class budget. Kelley Kerns, the journalism teacher applied for a Bear Grant and received the $1440 grant that will enable the newspaper to be printed with six publications throughout this year.

Jan Hiebert, the Executive Director of the SHS Foundation met, with the new journalism students at the end of October and got a photo of the editor and her fellow students receiving the Bear Grant check.
